A man has been arrested by police today on the charge of spreading a rumour about an earthquake. A resident of Bhojpur and currently living in Sinamangal, Kathmandu, Arjun Kumar Thapa was arrested from Gaushala, according to chief of Kathmandu police Uttam Raj Subedi.

Subedi had been going around claiming that an earthquake would take place within June 12, leading to great devastation. Calling himself an astrologer, Thapa had made the statements in different interviews shared in the social media, including YouTube.

As per the Disaster Risk Mitigation and Management Act, 2074, anyone found guilty of creating fear and terror by spreading rumours about a disaster is liable to a penalty of one hundred thousand rupees or six months jail sentence or both.
